Someone's birthday!

Barbie is 50 today! Wow. That is nearly unbelievable. My parents didn't own a TV set until I was 10 years old. I didn't see any advertisements for Barbie, yet I wanted one when I was four. Where did I ever see a Barbie? Maybe in the Simpson Sears catalogue. I devoured that book.
My parents gave me a knock-off Barbie doll for my 5th birthday. I still have her. Here she is! I can't remember what I named her, but I played with her for hours. I guess she's really a knock-off of the Tammy doll. My mom bought her at the Woolworth's store on Hastings Street in Vancouver for $1.99. Her outfits were 99 cents. The black case I kept her in was 99 cents too. My mom wouldn't buy me the real Barbie because she didn't think she was appropriate for young girls! I finally got my first Barbie this year. (see photo above) I couldn't resist her. I had Francie (for my 9th birthday) and Stacey (for my 8th birthday from an aunt) but never Barbie.

Here is the doll case.

I'm always amazed at all the things you still have! You took very good care of your things.

Happy birthday to Barbie!! It is hard to believe she has been around for so long and is still going strong....and for some reason, unlike me, she doesn't seem to be aging a bit. Seems as though she should be wearing glasses that she cannot see out of when they are on or off, have extensive dental work and at least have a few aches and pains like the rest of us by now...I vote we invent geriatric Barbie...with realistic proportions, middle age spread and all the wonderful things that come with aging!!
