The last of the 2010 Olympics...and the VSO season!

I just got home from a wonderful evening, spent with Robert and Matthew at the Vancouver Symphony in the lovely Orpheum Theatre on Seymour St. The two pieces which were played were "Scheherazade, Op. 35" by Rimsky-Korsakov; and "The Rite of Spring" by Stravinsky. I especially loved Scheherazade. It's simply beautiful Russian music.

At the end, Bramwell Tovey, the conductor, mentioned that when the Olympic men's gold hockey game was won (will we ever forget that moment?) the VSO played Canada's national anthem. He thought it would be fitting if they played it as the ending tonight to the season. So we all leapt to our feet, and sang "Oh Canada", while the VSO played and Bramwell Tovey conducted the audience.

It was a thrilling moment.

Years ago my kids had an Olympic video game and we used to make Canada win just so we could hear the anthem. It's just a really nice anthem. Our anthem is very difficult to sing and not that many people do it well.

Today is the day...right? Happy Birthday!
